Overview

Sidney’s Adventures and PonyTales – Interactive™ offer a multi-sensory, experiential literacy programme rooted in balanced literacy principles, designed to support all children, with particular benefit for:

  • Neurodivergent children
  • Reluctant or emerging readers
  • Children with SEND
  • Children who benefit from visual, sensory, and experiential learning

The programme combines inclusive storybooks with immersive, real-world literacy experiences, bringing stories to life through interaction, play, and emotional connection.

Children don’t just read the story — they experience it.

Educational Rationale

Many children struggle to engage with traditional literacy approaches that rely heavily on text, abstract imagination, or sustained focus. This can disproportionately affect:

  • Neurodivergent learners
  • Children with sensory processing differences
  • Children with delayed language development
  • Children who have experienced barriers to reading success

Sidney’s Adventures addresses this by:

  • Using minimal, rhythmical, predictable text
  • Relying on expressive illustrations to support meaning
    Reinforcing literacy through
    real-world sensory experiences
  • Supporting emotional understanding and social communication
  • Creating strong memory pathways through embodied learning

Programme Structure

1. The Books - Sidney's Adventures

The Sidney’s Adventures books are carefully designed to be enjoyed independently as inclusive, accessible story texts, and also to work in conjunction with PonyTales – Interactive™ sessions.

The books feature:

  • Minimal wording to reduce cognitive overload and support accessibility
  • Gentle, predictable rhythm to support word anticipation and confidence
  • Rich, expressive illustrations that convey emotion, action, and narrative meaning
  • Visual storytelling that supports comprehension beyond written text

This design makes the books accessible for:

  • Emerging and reluctant readers
  • Neurodivergent children and children with SEND
  • Visually-led learners and children who benefit from emotional cues

When used alongside PonyTales – Interactive™, the books take on an additional role as familiar, meaningful reference points. Children are encouraged to revisit the stories multiple times after sessions, allowing them to:

  • Relive shared experiences
  • Strengthen narrative memory
  • Reinforce vocabulary and emotional understanding
  • Build confidence through familiarity and repetition

The books, therefore, function both as standalone literacy resources and as anchors for experiential learning.

2. PonyTales – Interactive™ Sessions

PonyTales – Interactive™ sessions are delivered alongside the books to deepen understanding, engagement, and emotional connection.

Sessions are designed to bring the story world into real life and may include:

  • Immersive storytelling with Sidney the pony and animal friends
  • Multi-sensory activities (touch, movement, smell, sound) are linked directly to the narrative
  • Messy play and creative making inspired by story events
  • Making pony treats and shared social eating (e.g. Tea with a Pony)
  • Outdoor exploration (collecting, hunting, building, imagining)
  • Guided free play and cooperative tasks that extend story themes

These experiences allow children to embody the story, supporting comprehension, emotional literacy, and social communication in a natural, low-pressure way.

Importantly, the sessions do not replace reading; they enhance it. After participating, children often return to the books with increased enthusiasm, using the illustrations and text to recall, retell, and extend the story through their own play and conversation.

"This approach is informed by research into multi-sensory, experiential and inclusive literacy practices, which shows that meaningful, embodied experiences can strengthen engagement, comprehension and emotional connection to text. "

"Sidney’s Adventures and PonyTales – Interactive™ provide a gentle, inclusive, and innovative literacy experience that nurtures imagination, emotional connection, and a love of reading."

"This programme is not about accelerating reading —
It’s about
making reading meaningful, accessible, and joyful."
